Carmen Dalli - Well Being

Teachers are important to the well being of our society
Social necessity is a key marker of the profession
We need to support each others' well being

Well-Being:
Covid has hit our well being:
fears for health
emotionally
sense of fear - sees us behaving differently

Teachers will be dealing with fear, worry, concern, for parents around their children, and for teachers.

The importance of communication - teams
Relationships
How are we feeling about going back to school, are we all on the same page?
We can have practical steps to alleviate fear/confusion for teachers, eg everyone knows the cleaning routine.
We have to value the emotional well being of the team.
Ensure the classroom is an emotionally safe place.

When you have a sense of wellness it leads to a sense of calm when working with children.  Is this a good safe place to be?
Security is important.

Challenges for children:
1:1 at home, hard to come back into a group
children have to navigate social interactions again.
children may have had intense experience of discomfort, no exercise, difficult family dynamic, stress in the family.

This will be a time of transition.
Prepare for what children need at this time.
Being aware of children's temperaments - the child who adapts easily, or not.
Some may need more time.

How to reestablish connection with slow to warm children.
Using portfolio to narrate their story of you have been here before, this is what you did.
Engage in reminiscing with children, this is a good place to be together.

Be fully present with each child - hear how it is for them.
Notice the way they are expressing their feelings and their needs.

It is important to communicate well with parents, real and authentic communication.
